BOWTECH is a unique form of therapy developed in Australia
in the late 1950’s. This innovative therapy derives its name from its founder, Tom
Bowen. In brief, the therapy concentrates on the
treatment of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders.
In 1975, the Victoria
Government of Australia commissioned a study to analyze the efficiency of
the therapy. According to the ‘Webb Report of the Victoria Government of
Australia’, the study was conducted over 27 weeks whereby Tom Bowen treated
approximately 250 subjects a week, the equivalent of 13.000 subjects a year.
The study reached two important conclusions: 1) the therapy attained a 90%
efficacy rate; and 2) this result was realized over very few treatment
sessions.
The
primary objective of
BOWTECH is to relieve pain and dysfunctional conditions by
restoring the structural integrity of the body.
BOWTECH works with minimal intervention. BOWTECH’s
gentle resetting of the physical body encourages the brain to integrate
itself. Thereby providing an appropriate environment in which the body’s own
intelligence for healing may take place. The client lies on a treatment
table, wearing loose clothing. Most, but not all, moves can be carried out
without skin-to-skin contact.
The
BOWTECH moves stimulate the proprioceptors sending off information
through the central nervous system to the brain. The spindle cells and Golgi
tendon bodies reset the muscle’s resting tension level. The surrounding
fascia
becomes more fluid,
allowing greater movement of blood and lymph through the tissue enhancing
nutrition to, and waste removal from, the site.
The integration of the
moves begins as the practitioner leaves the room for several minutes.
Frequently clients become so relaxed that they fall asleep during the
session.
The number of sessions
required to treat a particular complaint will vary between people. The body
will respond according to its own ability to heal. Many conditions
are treated successfully and permanently within 3-5 sessions.
Upon
completion of the initial session, the client is provided with a written
document detailing actions to
be taken by the client on the day of treatment and throughout the week, as
well as some additional
follow-up information. There are times when clients are required to
supplement the BOWTECH
treatment plan by carrying out certain exercises at home. A BOWTECH
session initiates a cascade of beneficial changes that continue for several
days. Applying other manipulative therapies during this time can interrupt
and undermine the overall effectiveness of the BOWTECH work.
With the clients
attentive cooperation, the body will reset itself to its original blueprint.
No further treatments will be needed.
